Photoprotective research
Astaxanthin, the main carotenoid in ChUV, has been studied for its photoprotective properties on skin under UV stress.
- The study: a 2018 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. 22 healthy adults took 4 mg of astaxanthin a day or a placebo for 9 weeks.
- The result: the UV needed to redden skin (minimal erythema dose) rose by about 5.1 mJ/cm² with astaxanthin, against about 1.3 with placebo (p < 0.05).
- What it is not: a test of ChUV, a sunscreen, or a reason to extend a session.

Does ChUV compete with my beds or spray tans?
No, it works alongside them. ChUV adds a second layer of color from within: carotenoids from the gummy build up in the skin and warm it on top of the tan clients get from your beds or spray, for a richer, deeper look. The carotenoid color comes from a different pathway than a tan, so it is a daily retail add-on to the services you already sell.
Is ChUV a sunscreen, or a reason to extend a session?
No. ChUV is a dietary supplement, not sunscreen, and it is not a reason to extend a session. The astaxanthin study on this page is a study of astaxanthin at 4 mg a day, not a test of ChUV. Use SPF outdoors.
Will ChUV turn clients orange?
ChUV contains no beta carotene, the ingredient behind the unnatural yellowish-orange cast some tanning supplements cause. It uses two carotenoids, astaxanthin and lycopene, for a natural warm glow. It does change skin tone, gently, and that is the point.
What do I tell clients about taking it?
